Travelers coming to the US have several choices when it is a matter of moving around. Often renting a car is the first choice even with the recent hikes in the cost of gas. Although, for longer journeys flying often becomes the more attractive option. Yet there are occasions when you need to take a bus to reach your destination but how could anyone decide which mode of transport to take and when? To know this, keep on reading.

Traveling by bus in the US.

S. The truth is, if you want to travel around the States on a luxury bus then it is perfectly possible if you choose the right carrier. The big name in America is of course Greyhound buses and they not only dominate this area but they are the only bus service that can offer a nationwide network of routes. There are a couple of other large names, such as: Trailways and Coach USA but these are just networks of smaller privately owned carriers that have decided to share the same livery and marketing arrangement. Moreover there are many well-founded bus service companies who work at the regional level but have to take the help of Greyhound on some routes.

There are also what are referred to ‘Chinatown buses’ which offer a low cost travel option on selected routes - much less than traditional carriers. This type of service began as a means of providing commuting assistance to Chinese immigrants but with time, it has started attracting other groups of customers also. Competing head on with the airlines industry is the introduction of luxury bus services, yet another new introduction to the industry. Generally speaking, these services are used by people that are no further away than six hours say but can experience 1st class facilities on board the bus.

So how can you make up your mind when you need to travel by bus? To get an answer to this question, try answering the questions which appear below: If money is an issue the bus will beat just about anyone on price. S.

Would you be in need of a car, when you reach the destination? Remember in cities like New York, Boston and Washington DC, a car is not only useless but can prove to be a big hassle for driving around and finding a parking space.

How far are you going? If you are traveling less than a five or six hours it is probably faster to take the bus than to fly when you factor in waiting time at the airport. Plus, a bus would normally take you right to the heart of the city, which adds to your convenience as you do not have to loiter around the city trying to find your way about.

Remember, not all areas of the States have an airport local to them so often a bus may be your only option. Buses also allow you to see a bit of the country you might not normally see if there is no rush involved then this might be a pleasant way to travel. If you are rushed then taking the bus may not be a good idea as the journey could include traffic jams and the bus in any case travels less fast than other methods of travel. Thus if you take the picture in its entirety, whether you are planning inter city travel or thinking of traveling to remote sectors, traveling by bus is definitely the more superior option. As the gas prices soar and train services get curtailed, this could be one of the most viable options for traveling.
